2018 Candidates

Steve Weber, CPA
A financial professional as your Will County Treasurer

I have been your County Treasurer since 2010. I earned my BA in accounting from Lewis University, and was the Deputy Auditor for Will county for 14 years. I served as County Auditor from 2000-2008. During my Auditor term I saved the County over $1 Million Dollars each year I was in office. I have been a successful small business owner for over 25 years. I received national honors for my work as a certified public accountant and fraud investigator. In 2008 the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners published my work on computer fraud prevention. The FBI was involved as part of my team to uncover and stop fraud in county government. The Government Finance Officers Association honored me for Excellence in Financial Reporting and Innovative Accounting from 2000-2008. I also served as a special investigator to the Will County States Attorney to help combat white collar crime. I helped start a local community bank in New Lenox as an organizer/ director. Ten years in the banking industry helped me negotiate better deals for your County investments. We find cost savings through proven business best practices. As a CPA I have been advising business owners for over 30 years on ways to protect assets and operate more efficiently.

My first year as Treasurer I returned $240,000 from my budget unspent. We saved 20% by outsourcing the printing of the tax bill and gained a backup plan. We introduced anti-fraud technologies to protect county bank accounts. Eliminated approximately $25,000 in bank fees. Proposed legislation signed by the governor so counties can deposit funds in credit unions. Recovered $163,380 in unclaimed funds due the county. Saved over $185,694 on mailing tax notices with a postal loop hole. Adopted modern banking technology such as remote deposit capture and positive pay. We started the 4/10 work week for my staff, so they have a better life balance. We started the pre-payment program in 2012 to give property owners flexibility when paying taxes on any Will County property by allowing payments on a schedule convenient to the owner. I want to help people manage how much and how often they pay taxes by allowing pre-payments. I renegotiated the fees in our office to save you money. I believe it sends the wrong message when the county charges property owners a fee to pay property taxes online. I have reduced credit cards fees 10% and made echecks and ACH payments free. I hired a full -time investment manager to professionally manage our almost $400 million portfolio. We are the model that other Treasurers in the state follow and call for advice. We do like to share and help where we can. In my second year I made 6.5 times more interest than budgeted and to date over $40.8 Million in interest. In the past this office invested in CD’s and basically took what the bank was giving. This practice stopped when I was elected, and the banks now compete to get your county money. We even invest the tax levy for a very short 30 days and give the interest to the schools to help reduce the tax burden to you. It’s all about results, not politics. Thank you for supporting me and its my pleasure to serve you in this office.
