Will County Community Events Calendar
Will County's event calendar stays packed from spring through winter. With more than 40 municipalities and a population that's grown steadily over the past two decades, the county supports a surprising range of community gatherings. Some have been running for decades, while newer events pop up as communities expand and residents push for more local programming.
What follows is a seasonal breakdown of the events that draw the biggest crowds and provide the most value for residents looking to get involved. Not every event here runs on the same schedule year to year, so checking with individual municipalities or park districts before heading out is always worth the effort.
Spring and Summer Events Worth Marking
The event season kicks off in earnest around late April when farmers markets start setting up. The Joliet Farmers Market runs Tuesdays and Saturdays downtown, and Frankfort's market along the Old Plank Road Trail draws steady Thursday crowds from May through October. These aren't token produce stands. Vendors bring locally grown vegetables, artisan bread, handmade soaps, and prepared foods that reflect the county's demographic mix.
Memorial Day ceremonies take place in nearly every Will County community. The parades in Joliet and Lockport tend to be the largest, with veteran organizations, high school marching bands, and community groups marching through downtown streets. Plainfield Fest hits in June and remains one of the county's signature celebrations. Settlers' Park fills with carnival rides, live music stages, food vendors, and craft booths. Attendance regularly exceeds 30,000 over the festival weekend.
Summer concert series run in parks across the county. Bolingbrook's Performing Arts Center hosts outdoor shows, and smaller communities like Channahon and Shorewood run free concert nights that fill park pavilions. July 4th celebrations bring fireworks displays in at least a dozen locations. The Joliet show over the Des Plaines River and Plainfield's celebration at Settlers' Park are the two that draw the widest attendance.
Old Joliet Prison opens for public tours from May through October. The National Historic Landmark attracts history buffs, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone curious about what a 19th-century correctional facility actually looked like from the inside. Guided tour slots sell out quickly during peak summer weekends.
Fall and Winter Gatherings
September brings two of the county's strongest fall events. Lockport Old Canal Days celebrates the I&M Canal heritage that shaped the region's early growth. The festival stretches along the historic downtown strip with live bands, carnival rides, food trucks, and historical exhibits inside the canal museum. A few miles south, the Frankfort Fall Festival takes over the village square with arts, crafts, and entertainment that leans heavily into small-town charm.
October shifts toward Halloween programming. Trunk-or-treat events run through neighborhoods and church parking lots across the county. Centennial Trail and Pilcher Park host fall nature walks, and several communities organize haunted houses or spooky-themed park district events for families with younger children.
The holiday season fills November and December with tree lighting ceremonies, holiday markets, and winter festivals. Frankfort's holiday market transforms the downtown area, and New Lenox runs a Winter Wonderland event that includes Santa visits, ice skating, and holiday craft vendors. Joliet's City Center puts up a large-scale light display that stays illuminated into early January.
Even during the colder months, indoor events keep the calendar moving. The Rialto Square Theatre in downtown Joliet programs concerts, comedy shows, and touring Broadway productions year-round. Community centers and libraries across the county host workshops, lectures, and family programming that fills the gap between outdoor event seasons.
